New Family Social explain complex hurdles for LGBT foster carers and adopters

Diagrama’s fostering and adoption teams have been working with LGBT charity New Family Social to help provide sensitive support throughout application processes and beyond.

Diagrama’s joint adoption and fostering panel members joined social workers and other members of the team for training presented by New Family Social where their representatives explained the complex hurdles that LGBT applicants face when applying to foster or adopt.

Diagrama staff were taken through the history of equalities and LGBT rights and how everyday general occurrences in life make assumptions about couples being heterosexual – such as application forms which specify Mr and Mrs instead of ‘partner’.

New Family Social’s team also spoke about the unique strengths that the LGBT community has which can benefit children who are looked after and going into adoption.

The training session rounded off a week of activities to mark LGBT Adoption and Fostering week, which included three Diagrama fostering and adoption information events.

Gunter Becht, Diagrama Adoption Manager said: “It has been a busy time and we have been fortunate enough to meet with many very promising prospective adopters and foster carers from the LGBT community. We are looking forward to meeting them again very soon and supporting them on their journey to becoming adopters and foster carers with Diagrama.”

Diagrama offers free membership to New Family Social to all our LGBT adopters and foster carers. If you would like to find out more call our team today on 0800 802 1910 or contact us through the website.
