At Diagrama Foundation, we see first-hand the difference a compassionate foster carer can make in the life of a young person, and we are calling for more people to step forward and help meet this urgent demand.
I recently watched a lovely story on BBC’s Extraordinary Portraits about a wonderful couple who have fostered over 200 young people. Their dedication has given countless teenagers the support and guidance they need to thrive.
At Diagrama, we are contacted numerous times each week by local authorities who need loving, secure homes for teenagers. Teenagers in care often face significant challenges, including disrupted education, emotional trauma, and feelings of uncertainty about their future. A stable foster home can be the key to transforming their lives, giving them the confidence to build positive relationships, pursue their goals, and believe in themselves.
While fostering teenagers comes with its unique challenges, it is also incredibly fulfilling. Many carers find that older children bring engaging conversations, unique personalities, and the opportunity to see their progress towards independence. The positive impact of fostering a teenager can last a lifetime – for both the young person and the carer.
If you’ve ever considered fostering, now is the time to act. You can make a real difference by opening your heart and home to a young person who needs it most.
To learn more about the incredible impact foster carers can have, watch the BBC’s Extraordinary Portraits, which recently featured Marva and Lionel, a couple from Birmingham who have fostered over 200 teenagers. Watch here.
